The railroad portage over the Allegheny Mountains, though only a short section of the Pennsylvania Main Line, was curcial to the enerprise since it joined the system's 2 great canals into an efficient artery between eastern and western Pennsylvania. Considered a major engineering feat of its time, the portage enabled passengers leaving Philadelphia in 1840 to reach Pittsburgh in 4 days, rather than 23
