The C&O canal covers 184.5 miles and the park preserves the history of the C&O towpath, it's structures, scenery along the Potomac River floodplain, and the Appalachian mountains. The 74 lock system provides calm waters for canoeists and fishermen. It's towpay offers an excellent flat bike and hike path
