The events at this fort mirrored the development of the nation from 1842 to 1873. This fort was originally built to keep peace on the indian frontier, was sold by the army in 1855 and became the nucleus of the town of Fort Scott. It became a hotbed of violence during the "Bleeding of Kansas" years, the Civil War and during the development of the railroad in the area.
