The Gates house on Delaware St. in Independence began as the 19th Centruy mansion belonging to the grandparents of Elizabeth Virginia Wallace. Ms. Wallace later became Mrs. Harry Truman and the First Lady. During Truman's presidency, it was the 'Summer White House' before being purchased by the Trumans as their retirement home.
