The May 8, 1846 Battle of Palo Alto was the first major battle of the Mexican-American War (1846-48). At Palo Alto, General Zachary Taylor's 2,300 man US Army of Occupation used its superior cannon and innovative artillery methods to duel General Marioano Arista's 3,600 man force.
