Park Details:
Richmond was the capital of the Confederacy. Its capture was one of the primary goals for Union commanders throughout the Civil War. Seven Union campaigns targeted the city and General Robert E. Lee of Northern Virginia. Only 3 succeeded in reaching the outskirts of Richmond. The city finally fell on April 3, 1865, as Lee's defenses at Petersburg crumbled. Richmond National Battlefield Park interprets 11 historical sites and battlefields related to these military actions.
